After more than 2 years of working in the offline payment sector, we’ve begun to appreciate some of the things that makes us unique. As a short brief, Gharpay is primarily a doorstep payment gateway whose niche lies in collecting cash and cheques for digital goods like airline tickets, insurance documents etc. To our credit, today, more than 600 merchants across India trust us for the payment processing needs. Our operational network extends across 17 cities in India and we are continuously expanding this reach. Here are some of the things that make us unique.

Something for everyone

Unlike most online gateways we don’t ask our clients for a monthly fees or annual maintenance fees. The transaction charges are competitive to any online payment gateway in India. The best part, we don’t expect our merchants to commit to any minimum volume of transactions. This makes it easy for small and medium online businesses in India to start working with us and leverage our services to grow their customer base.

Heavy focus on technology

We are primarily a technology led company. It takes developers less than 1 day to integrate and go-live with our systems. Once an order hits our systems, our human network of Payment Executives begin working on it. All our Payment Executives carry smart phones which they use to update your orders in real time. This ensures that everyone is on the same page at all times. Also, all the payments that we collect get reconciled to the merchant’s account within 48 hours. The technical infrastructure that we have built around this large scale logistics problem ensures that most activities are automated thus making it smooth runnings for you and your customers.

Security, Safety, Service

Since starting this business in January 2011, we have never had an incidence of cash loss. Our employee hiring and training is streamlined in such a way that our PEs act courteously and  professionally with your end customers. Our support and redressal processes are streamlined in such a way that any operational issues get addressed within 12 hours and resolved within 48 hours across all of our functioning cities. The stellar service that we provide has helped us gain and retain large clients like Cleartrip, Jet airways, Naukri, Groupon, Book My Show, Allianz insurance, Thomas cook etc.

Always innovating

Gharpay’s vision is to make payments simpler in India. We began our journey by collecting cash and cheques from customers who either didn’t have access to a credit/debit card or didn’t know how to use it. Following in those footsteps, we are  trying to become a holistic payment solution at the doorstep. The team is already beginning to pilot other forms of offline payments at the doorstep. Most people that you talk to will tell you that starting or running a business is not easy. Pitfalls include loss of hair, sleepless nights and very few weekends. Most of these problems solve themselves if you have a great team, supportive investors and more importantly awesome clients and customers. At Gharpay, we’ve been blessed with all three. The journey from our first pitch to over 450 merchants that we serve today has been tumultuous (obviously), but it’s been a journey worth embarking on.

Looking back over the last year, we’ve grown a considerable amount. Transacting over 30 crores in cash without an incidence of fraud or miscalculation has been a massive achievement. This only proves that the processes and monitoring technology that we set up have worked. We’ve gone to extreme lengths (22 times around the earth to be more precise) in order to ensure that we reach your customers quickly and efficiently. Also, with the plethora of clients that we serve today, we’ve noticed how seasonal certain businesses can become. For example, if you’re an event ticketing company, it’s highly recommended that you have everything in place before October or you may miss out on the moolah that can be raked in at the end of the year.

Here’s a small infograph of the trends we’ve seen in the market and an indication of what is to come in the following year. At Gharpay we find ways to solve daily operational issues using technology. If you join the team as a Software developer you might work on  a problem not dissimilar to the one mentioned below.

Problem Statement:

 Vishnu, our payment executive in Hyderabad, has “n” (details given below)* number of collections to do within the city.  He starts from his house at Jubilee Hills (Latitude: 17.42953, Longitude: 78.41266) at 12pm in the afternoon and begins to go on his rounds. Design the most optimal route (using Google Maps API) that Vishnu needs to take to service all the orders. Sounds easy? Not really.

In India, customers are a little fastidious. Each customer has limitations on when he/she can meet Vishnu and pay him.** Take that into consideration and now design the most optimal route that Vishnu can take and service all the orders.

In order to calculate the time taken to travel between 2 locations, assume that Google Maps’ results are valid and absolute.

Dear nameless readers,

I’m excited to announce that tomorrow is my first day working full time on GharPay.  Two good friends (way) smarter than me are also founding this venture along with me, working with whom is really the big perk of doing this startup. I’m really looking forward to earning my lunches and dinners (and hopefully a breakfast occasionally, fingers crossed) the hard way.

What is GharPay? Its a way to pay offline for stuff that you order on the internet or on the phone. A simpler but an exaggerated way of describing would be ‘PayPal for offline payments’.

I’ll try to blog often, perhaps half-baked philosophies or about the surprises of the real world. One day when I’m famous or dead due to poverty, you can tell people you were among the handful people who read my blog before others did.
